This Week's App: Anchor

What is Anchor?

Anchor is a free podcasting platform created and run by Spotify. It allows you or your students to record, edit, upload and release audio podcasts to a public page in Anchor that can be shared with anyone. Anchor also then automatically gives anyone the ability to distribute their podcast to the major platforms like Apple, Google, Spotify and more.

What can it be used for?

The answer to this question is simple...creating and sharing podcast content. If you want your students to create a podcast for class or want to provide content to your students in a podcast format, Anchor is perfect for that.

Anchor provides a one stop solution for both you and your students. For example if you assign out a podcast activity to your students they can record directly in Anchor, edit it there, and then publish it right to a link that they could share to the class.

It should be mentioned here like Josh and Will mentioned in this episode that podcasting can be a great activity for students. It allows students to tackle content in a creative way and Anchor is great tool for making this happen.

How do I get started?

Like with many of our other recommended tools you first need to Sign up for an Anchor account. Note Anchor is completely free so there are no charges involved.

Once you have created an account we recommend creating a test episode first to get comfortable. If you are having your students create a podcast scaffold out the creation by having them make trailer for their podcast. To create and episode you have two options:

  1. Record it in Anchor - You can record audio directly in Anchor with up to 5 other people. Then edit it directly in the tool, add a description, and publish it to Anchor.
  2. Upload it to Anchor - You can record the audio in another app or tool and then upload that audio file to Anchor to edit it, add a description, and publish it to Anchor.

Once you record your first episode then you can play with customizing your Anchor page. To learn more we recommend checking out this brief tour of Anchor from Josh below:
